Pune, 6th May 2024: As summer temperatures soar, malls across the city are emerging as havens of respite, drawing crowds with promises of cool comfort amidst scorching heat. The allure of air conditioning coupled with enticing summer sales, offers, activities, and giveaways has propelled footfalls to unprecedented levels, surging over 100% compared to the same period last year, even on weekdays.

Managers of shopping complexes note a diverse influx of visitors, ranging from families seeking leisurely outings to students seeking refuge from the heat. A manager at a prominent mall remarked, “The surge in footfalls, particularly during daytime hours, has been remarkable. We welcome visitors of all ages, witnessing a steady stream of patrons from lunchtime onwards, extending well into the evening hours. While this surge hasn’t necessarily translated into increased sales, the bustling atmosphere augurs well for business.”

For many youngsters, the allure of the mall lies in its cool confines, offering a budget-friendly alternative to outdoor activities. A college student highlighted the appeal of lounging in air-conditioned comfort without the pressure of spending, stating, “SGS mall has become our go-to spot. We can relax, listen to music, and hang out without any obligations. It’s a welcome escape from the heat without burning a hole in our pockets.”

As medical experts caution against venturing outdoors during peak hours, malls have emerged as sanctuaries for those seeking relief from the sweltering heat, especially individuals without access to air conditioning at home or plagued by power outages. However, the influx of visitors has posed challenges for mall authorities, who strive to maintain comfortable temperatures amidst the surge in foot traffic.

Despite efforts to regulate indoor climates, some visitors lament the discomfort caused by overcrowding. A mother of two children, expressed her frustration, stating, “The malls are packed, and it’s not always as cool inside as you’d expect. The crowds can make it feel just as hot indoors, defeating the purpose of seeking refuge from the heat.”
