Pune Metro Extension: First Segment Laid on PCMC to Bhakti-Shakti Route

Akurdi, 23rd April 2025: In a significant step towards improving public transportation in the Pune Metropolitan Region, the first segment on the PCMC to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk Metro route has been laid today, marking a milestone in the Pune Metro Phase II expansion. The segment launching girder was installed at Khandoba Mal Chowk, between Chinchwad and Akurdi stations.
This route is an extension of the operational Vanaz–Ramwadi and PCMC–Swargate corridors, and is poised to strengthen the connectivity across key residential, industrial, and semi-urban areas in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The work on this corridor began on July 6, 2024, and construction is progressing rapidly. Today, workers completed laying 4 out of 12 segments between piers no. 453 and 454, with the remaining 8 segments under progress. This extended metro line will have a total of 151 piers and 1,337 segments, of which 517 segments have already been cast.
4 New Stations to Transform Commute in PCMC
The extended route will include four new metro stations:
Chinchwad Station – to serve nearby residential colonies, commercial areas, and provide direct access to Chinchwad Railway Station.
Akurdi Station – designed to cater to educational, residential, and industrial zones.
Nigdi Station – will offer connectivity to residential and recreational destinations.
Bhakti-Shakti Station – will link religious and entertainment centers, along with PMPML bus depots that connect outer areas like Dehu, Chikhali, Talegaon, and Vadgaon.
Speaking on the occasion, Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of MahaMetro, expressed confidence in the pace of development. “The construction of the first span on the PCMC to Nigdi route has begun. This is a matter of great joy. We are committed to completing this route at the earliest,” he said.
Pune Metro Sees Surge in Ridership
With both Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate routes fully operational, Pune Metro is emerging as a reliable and efficient public transport system. The average daily ridership has reached 1.6 lakh, reflecting growing public confidence in the service.
The PCMC–Bhakti-Shakti extension is expected to further boost these numbers by offering seamless connectivity to a wider commuter base, reducing traffic congestion, and contributing to a greener urban commute.
