Pune Municipal Corporation Seeks Rs 300 Crore for Mutha Riverfront Development Near Rajaram Bridge
Pune, 29th July 2025: In a major push for flood mitigation and beautification of the Mutha riverbanks, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sought a ₹300 crore grant from the state government for river improvement works between Vadgaon Khurd and Rajaram Bridge. The proposal urges the Urban Development Department to sanction the funds under disaster management provisions.
The move follows heavy rainfall on July 24, 2024, when a large water discharge from Khadakwasla dam triggered flooding in several low-lying areas along Sinhagad Road—including Etanagar, Vitthalnagar, and Nimbajnagar. The incident prompted local residents to demand urgent implementation of riverfront improvement measures in the affected region.
PMC Commissioner Navalkishore Ram has officially submitted the proposal to the Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department.
Planned Work under “Stretch-6”
The 4.10-kilometer stretch from Vadgaon Khurd to Rajaram Bridge—termed Stretch-6 of the larger river improvement initiative—includes the following proposed developments:
-Construction of flood-protection embankments
-Plantation drives to enhance green cover
-Scientific drainage and nullah planning
-Riverfront beautification and landscaping
-Creation of public spaces, including a jogging track
The PMC has already made significant progress on earlier stretches of the river rejuvenation project, with the Sangamwadi to Bund Garden segment reported to be 90% complete.
