Mumbai/Pune, 21st January 2022: The trailer of ‘Why I Killed Gandhi’ has put the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in trouble on social media. In this film, Shirur NCP MP and popular television actor Amol Kolhe is seen playing the role of Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

This trailer of more than 2 minutes on social media is getting a lot of headlines in social media. In the trailer of this film, the NCP leader is giving a statement in court justifying Gandhi’s murder.

According to the makers of the film, the movie is intended to depict the legal statement made by Godse during the Gandhi assassination trial and aims to take a different look at the history of 20th century India.

On Thursday, Kolhe clarified through a social media post after the uproar over the film and also urged people to differentiate between ‘reel life’ and ‘real life’. In his social media post, Kolhe said, “…Sometimes, suddenly there are roles where you don’t agree with the ideology, but they challenge you as an artist. One such role is that of Nathuram Godse. On a personal level, I am not a supporter of Gandhi’s assassination or Nathuram’s glorification, but I have tried to do justice to the role that has been given to me. Freedom of expression as an artist and freedom of thought as an individual must be respected! I hope people will look at this work with an open mind.”

Kolhe represents the Shirur constituency and is a popular face of the party in the state. Kolhe is also a popular television actor and has previously played the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son Sambhaji Maharaj.

Kolhe’s aide in the party and a close aide of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Jitendra Awhad, has criticized Kolhe’s decision to play the role of Nathuram Godse.

Awhad said, “He may have played that role as an artist, but I feel nobody from Maharashtra should play Nathuram. When an actor plays a role, he has to completely immerse himself in the role. When you watch Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi, you see the actor living the life of Gandhi. One’s character and thoughts have to be internalized. So, in clear terms, I feel that as an actor, keeping his political links aside, he should have refused the role.”
