Kalyani Nagar, 25th October 2023: Unresolved electrical wires continue to endanger the safety of Kalyani Nagar residents, despite prior assurances by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). A hazardous situation persists as these wires snake through footpaths, trees, and roadways, posing a significant risk to pedestrians and motorists alike.

These low-hanging wires have led to numerous accidents and close calls, forcing residents to navigate treacherous paths. As if this were not dire enough, the danger escalates when rains or strong winds threaten to send these wires plummeting onto unsuspecting pedestrians, potentially causing severe injuries or worse.

The PMC’s recent actions, though commendable, fell short of resolving the issue comprehensively. A JCB was dispatched to address the problem, but it only cleared wires from a specific location, leaving the rest unattended. The wires near Gold Adlabs Chowk and D-Mart Lane in Kalyani Nagar remain, endangering lives and obstructing the public’s daily routines.

Residents have banded together, urgently demanding immediate action to alleviate this menace. They propose a multi-pronged approach of relocating the wires underground, imposing fines on companies responsible, and proactive and regular inspections by the PMC should be implemented to identify and address potential hazards, thus averting similar crises in the future and installing surveillance cameras.

Monica Sharma, an Activist from Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar said, “The situation in Kalyani Nagar is deeply concerning. The online complaint system may indicate resolution, but the reality on our streets tells a different story. Wires are still strewn about, posing a significant fire hazard and jeopardizing our safety. The recent JCB operation, limited to a specific spot, falls far short of what’s needed. We implore the PMC to act swiftly, coordinating with us, the residents, to comprehensively address this issue.”

Nilesh Chavan, a resident said, “The wires are present on almost every tree and are hanging low in the middle of the streets. These wires appear invisible while driving and pose a threat of accidents. We have been complaining for over a month. If you look at the wires, they are dusty and have been untouched for quite a while now. Yet PMC hasn’t taken any action.”

When Punekar News raised the issue to Mangesh Misal, PMC Electrical Engineer, he said “We conduct regular drives but this is a recurring problem. I request the residents to inform me of the exact spots. I will send help on Saturday. We, however, don’t impose fines. I will take this matter up with higher authorities for the imposition of fines and installation of cameras.”
