Pune: PCMC To Install 2,930 CCTV Cameras Across Pimpri-Chinchwad For Enhanced Safety
Pimpri, 27th October 2023: In a move aimed at bolstering public safety and surveillance, Pimpri-Chinchwad City is set to install 2,930 CCTV cameras in the second phase of the project. The locations for these cameras have received approval from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate, ensuring strategic placement to enhance security and monitoring. An estimated cost of 169 crore rupees will be allocated for this initiative, as confirmed by Babasaheb Galbale, the Municipal Engineer of the Electricity Department at the Municipal Corporation.
Before this phase, the city had already seen the installation of CCTV cameras as part of a collaboration between the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Smart City program. The Municipal Corporation had previously installed 2,490 CCTVs, while the Smart City initiative contributed an additional 5,490 cameras, totalling 7,980 CCTV cameras in operation.
Responding to requests from former corporators, social organizations, and citizens, the Municipal Corporation has decided to add 2,930 more CCTV cameras to the city’s surveillance network, with the necessary permissions from the police.
These new cameras will be distributed across various locations, including 2,800 cameras at 500 different sites such as public squares, hospitals, schools, markets, and more. Additionally, ten-speed cameras will be positioned at critical locations, while 120 cameras will be designated for use along the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) route. In total, the 2,930 new cameras will be placed at 570 diverse locations throughout the city.
Joint City Engineer Galbale confirmed that the implementation of this project is set to commence shortly.
Despite the extensive surveillance network, it has been observed that the safety of CCTV cameras themselves has been compromised on multiple occasions. Instances of CCTV camera batteries being stolen in various areas have been reported, leading to police investigations and subsequent arrests. However, the incidents highlight the need for additional measures to secure these crucial surveillance assets.
