Pune, 26th November 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is ramping up efforts to curb open-area garbage burning, taking swift action against three staffers engaged in the prohibited activity.

With recent stringent state government orders to combat air pollution, PMC is on high alert to ensure the city’s air quality remains healthy.

Over the past two days, fines and notices were issued to three cleaning staffers in Hadapsar caught burning waste instead of following proper disposal procedures. PMC’s solid waste management department has instructed all ward offices to emphasize to cleaning staffers the prohibition of garbage burning.

Despite penalties imposed in 74 cases this November, citizens report persistent instances of garbage burning. To address this, night patrolling at vulnerable spots will commence this week, targeting both staff and citizens engaging in the prohibited act.

Penalties of Rs 1,000 will be applied to individuals, with increasing amounts for habitual offenders.
