Pune: PMC To Auction 2,000 Properties Over Rs 200 Crore Property Tax Arrears
Pune, 27th December 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to auction 2,000 properties whose owners have failed to pay property taxes. These properties collectively owe approximately Rs 200 crore in arrears, and the auction process is expected to be completed before March. However, given the poor response to previous auctions, doubts arise about whether this auction will receive a better response.
PMC’s Taxation and Tax Collection Department is grappling with arrears totalling nearly Rs 10,000 crore from various properties across Pune. Properties involved in legal disputes are also being sealed by the PMC administration. This year, PMC sealed 2,600 properties, and 2,000 of these will now be auctioned in a single process.
A dedicated team has been formed by PMC to handle this auction. The team will focus solely on tasks such as determining property prices, issuing notices to defaulting property owners, and planning the auction process, according to Madhav Jagtap, Head of the Taxation and Tax Collection Department.
As of now, PMC’s income through property taxes has reached Rs 1,870 crore, against a target of Rs 2,727 crore for this financial year. Achieving this target has become challenging due to a stay by the Maharashtra State Government on collecting property tax from 34 newly included villages. To compensate, PMC is concentrating on recovering arrears from other areas, leading to the sealing and auctioning of properties.
