Pune, January 16, 2021: Puneites have set a new record. The city has topped in the state in terms of paying the property tax despite 2020 being the pandemic year. And instead of a pat on the back, Puneites will be facing the hike in the property tax.

Another point is the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is giving a blank eye to the defaulters who despite the Abhay scheme (concession while paying the dues) have not paid the dues. Total dues over Rs 5547 crore have been unpaid.

And with the proposed 11% hike in the property tax, the corporation could collect only Rs 130 crore. Then, what is the need for the hike? Is the question on the minds of lakhs of sincere taxpayers.

The property tax department has over 10.5 lakh properties registered with them. Out of which only 7.5 lakh are sincere taxpayers. Few of the defaulters have gone to court while few have got blessings from political leaders.

“If the dues are recovered, then corporation won’t have to go for the hike for next 10  years”, said a social activist.
