Pune University Authorities Raid Female Hostel At Night, Essential Items Seized

Pune, 13th November 2022: In the student hostel of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), the rooms of the students were checked on the night of 11th November without any prior warning. During the cold days, the students do not have any facility to make hot water in the hostel, so the students use electric devices like kettles and grates to make hot water. In the past, many times, the students have complained to the university to get hot water.

However, no facility has been provided by the university yet. The relevant materials were seized in a surprise raid at night. Many girls had their lockers broken. Authorities went down to very low levels and used abusive language, the students alleged. Many girls climbed the wall in the dark at night and threw their materials out to their friends.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has already demanded a “shared kitchen” from the administration. On cold days, the student must heat the water. Therefore, until the university administration provides public kitchen facilities in the hostel for female students, this checking should be stopped immediately, and the materials taken should be returned immediately, they demanded.

After providing public facilities, the girls should be given notice and asked to send the materials home, and then appropriate action should be taken if the materials are found. A demand was made by the ABVP to the Registrar and in-charge Vice-Chancellor. At this time, the ABVP delegation proposed that this process should be implemented legally without allowing any disturbance in the student hostel.

The administration will soon provide public facilities; it is dangerous for girls to use such personal electronic devices, and it is banned. The Registrar assured that the administration will soon provide public facilities to the girls, ABVP members said.

ABVP has warned the administration that if this facility is not provided, then it will protest strongly.
