Pune, 11th September 2023: In response to the alarming trend of illegal rooftop hotels mushrooming across the city without the necessary permits, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken decisive action to curb these unauthorized establishments. To address the issue, a joint meeting has been convened by the PMC, in collaboration with the District Administration, Pune City Police, and State Excise Department, scheduled for Thursday, September 14th.

The rise of rooftop bars and hotels, operating without official approval from the municipal authorities, has prompted numerous complaints from concerned residents in affected areas. The unauthorized establishments not only disrupt the local communities but also pose significant safety hazards, particularly in the event of a fire emergency, where customers may face difficulty exiting the premises swiftly, potentially jeopardizing lives.

Furthermore, these illicit rooftop hotels are subjected to triple taxation, but some hoteliers, allegedly under political pressure, continue to flout the regulations and reopen their establishments despite municipal orders to demolish these structures.

Adding to the complexity of the issue, the Pune Police have officially written to both the district administration and the Pune Municipal Corporation, raising concerns about the law and order situation in the vicinity of hotels.

The Municipal Corporation has taken a firm stance against the operation of hotels in unauthorized locations, emphasizing the importance of acquiring a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Municipal Corporation prior to obtaining licenses for selling alcohol and operating hotels. The PMC has also communicated to the District Collector its intention to withhold permissions for businesses that violate construction regulations.

Against this backdrop, a critical meeting has been scheduled on Thursday, September 14th, involving key officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Building Permission Department, the District Administration, Police, and the State Excise Department. During the meeting, the Municipal Corporation will present its case and advocate for the necessity of obtaining an NOC, which they believe is the key to resolving the issue of illegal rooftop hotels.

Commissioner Vikram Kumar expressed confidence that by adhering to the PMC’s NOC requirements, a resolution can be reached, alleviating the persistent issue of illegal rooftop hotels in Pune and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike.
