Pune’s Rs 42,711 Cr Ring Road Project Set to Transform City’s Connectivity and Urban Expansion

Pune, 8th June 2025: Pune is on the cusp of a major infrastructure overhaul as the ambitious ₹42,711 crore Ring Road project moves rapidly toward reality. Designed to revolutionize travel, reduce congestion, and accelerate suburban development, the project is taking shape across the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) with land acquisition nearing its final stages and construction work already underway in several zones.
Stretching over 172 kilometers, this six-lane circular expressway—flanked by two service lanes—will form a continuous transport loop around Pune, connecting multiple highways and far-flung rural belts to the city’s urban core. Developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) with active support from PMRDA, the road is being built in four stages across Pune’s eastern and western zones.
A Corridor of Growth
“This isn’t just about building a road; it’s about linking opportunity,” a senior MSRDC official said. “We’re integrating neglected outskirts into Pune’s development story.”
The road will pass through 29 villages, bringing regions like Wagholi, Vadachiwadi, Kesnand, Tulapur, and Chandkhed into the fold of mainstream growth. As land development accelerates, commercial interest in these zones has spiked, with builders and investors eyeing land parcels for industrial hubs, IT parks, and logistics centers.
Key Highlights of the Ring Road Project:
- Total Length: 172 km
- Total Budget: ₹42,711 crore
- Lanes: 6 main lanes + 2 service lanes
- Phases: 4, covering both East and West Pune corridors
- Villages Covered: 29
- Land Acquired: Over 1,740 hectares; 24% acquisition completed
- Execution Agency: MSRDC with PMRDA coordination
- Construction Start: December 2023
- Expected Completion: December 2026
The alignment strategically links Pune to key highways—Mumbai-Pune-Solapur, Pune-Satara, Pune-Ahmednagar, and Pune-Nashik—positioning the road as a vital economic and logistical spine.
On-Ground Momentum
Thanks to a robust monitoring system dubbed the “War Room Initiative,” project coordination is being handled in real-time. Soil testing and land preparation are ongoing in priority areas, with visible progress at multiple locations including Chandkhed and Urse.
To enforce timely execution, contractors face fines of ₹1 lakh per day for missing deadlines. “This level of accountability ensures the project doesn’t just move, but moves on time,” said another official close to the project.
Infrastructure Beyond Roads
In addition to roadwork, the project includes an extensive network of supporting infrastructure:
- 8 flyovers
- 4 major bridges
- 7 viaducts
- 14 subways
- 13 advanced funnel-shaped traffic junctions
These features aim to streamline traffic flow while ensuring safety for pedestrians and non-motorized traffic.
Ripple Effect on Local Economy
The entry of nine construction companies across major sections like Khadakwasla, Mulshi, and Chakan has already begun to stimulate the local economy. “There’s been a noticeable uptick in labor demand and material supply in these areas,” said a contractor from a leading firm involved in the project.
Industrialists and urban planners believe that once completed, the Ring Road will serve as a catalyst for creating satellite townships, easing pressure on Pune’s crowded center, and reducing urban pollution through more efficient vehicular movement.
A Future-Ready Vision
“This is not just an expressway. It’s a blueprint for balanced urban growth,” said an official from PMRDA. “The Ring Road will support everything from daily commutes to long-haul logistics while enhancing the quality of life by decentralizing city congestion.”
Authorities expect the project to trigger land value appreciation and private investments in commercial, retail, and industrial developments along the corridor.
Environmental and Urban Benefits
- Decongestion of city roads
- Reduction in pollution and emissions
- Improved access to healthcare, education, and markets in remote areas
With December 2026 set as the target for completion, the Pune Ring Road is more than just a mobility solution—it is poised to be the foundational framework for the city’s future as a sustainable, inclusive, and interconnected metro.
