Navi Mumbai, 7th December 2023: A potentially catastrophic incident was narrowly avoided today morning on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway when the rear tyre of a Maharashtra State Transport (ST) bus heading towards Alibaug from Swargate in Pune burst near Anda Point (Ariwali). The quick thinking and skilled manoeuvring of the ST bus driver averted a fatal accident, preventing the bus from plunging into the valley next to the road.

The incident unfolded as the ST bus was making its journey from Swargate to Alibaug. Near Anda Point on the expressway, the rear tyre of the bus suffered a burst, causing the driver to momentarily lose control. Despite the challenging circumstances, the skilled driver made commendable efforts to regain control.

Recognizing the impending danger due to the valley adjacent to the road, the ST bus driver took a critical decision. In a remarkable display of skill, the driver steered the bus onto a mound of mud situated next to the road. This strategic move prevented the bus from careening into the valley, ultimately saving the lives of the approximately 30 to 35 passengers on board.

The foresight and presence of mind exhibited by the ST bus driver played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of all passengers. If not for the driver’s quick actions and decision to mount the bus on the mound of mud, the situation could have resulted in a tragic accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

Local authorities and transportation officials have commended the ST bus driver for his skilful and decisive actions, emphasizing the importance of driver training and preparedness in handling emergencies on busy expressways.
