Shock Over Electricity Bills: Pune Citizens Receive Rs 24,000–25,000 Charges, Demand Action from MSEDCL
Reported by Shoaib Tadvi
Pune, 28th August 2025: Several Pune residents have raised serious concerns over unusually high electricity bills issued by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), citing possible meter errors and inflated charges.
Rajwant Singh Gurudatta Pritam Singh received a July 2025 electricity bill of ₹24,310, far higher than his usual monthly bills of ₹1,200–₹3,000. In a formal complaint to MSEDCL’s Fire Brigade Sub-Division, he alleged that the previous meter reading had been incorrectly entered as “0,” while the current reading was recorded at 1,136 units. This led to billing for 1,270 units in a single cycle, which he termed “completely unjust.”
In his complaint, Singh demanded that MSEDCL:
Rectify the bill immediately based on actual meter readings.
Waive the incorrect charges and issue a corrected bill.
Ensure such errors are not repeated in the future.
He further stated that the inflated bill was causing both mental harassment and financial strain. “They are threatening to cut my electricity line and harassing me mentally. I have appointed my lawyer, Zeeshan Syed, to send a legal notice and seek compensation,” Singh said.
Similarly, another consumer, Shekhar Yadav, reported receiving a bill of ₹25,390 for consumer number 160248773089, due on September 9, 2025. He explained:
“For my EV charging station, I have a separate meter. I charge my vehicle for just one hour twice a week, consuming only 45 watts per charge. My first two months’ bills were around ₹240 after installing the new meter. I don’t understand why the third month’s bill has increased so drastically.”
Responding to the complaints, Vikas Puri, an MSEDCL official in Pune, clarified: “The meter was changed 2–3 months ago. In Raj’s case, unaccounted units from the old faulty meter were added to the new meter reading, which led to a higher bill. In Shekhar’s case, the higher units are a result of electricity consumption from the EV charging station. The previous shortfall in recorded units has now been adjusted in the new bill.”
These cases have added to growing public frustration in Pune over rising electricity bills and alleged meter-related discrepancies. Residents are urging MSEDCL to conduct proper verification of meter readings and ensure transparent billing practices.
Authorities, in turn, have appealed to consumers to carefully review their bills and promptly report any irregularities.
