Nashik, 30 March 2026: As part of infrastructure preparations for Simhastha Kumbh 2027, 12 new ghats are being developed along the Godavari in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, significantly expanding the bathing and ritual space available to pilgrims. The work is being executed by NMC, MSIDC, and the Water Resources Department, and is expected to be completed well before the Mela begins.

Nashik: 10 New Ghats

Nashik’s ghat network is being expanded from 10 existing ghats to 20, spanning approximately 9 kilometres along the Godavari. The 10 new ghats — Kapila Sangam Ghat, Nandini Sangam Ghat, Takali Sangam Bridge Ghat, Takali Sangam Ghat, Nandur Dasak Left Bank, Nandur Dasak Right Bank, Odha Ghat, Someshwar Waterfall Ghat, Navashya Ganpati Ghat, and Lakshminarayan Ghat — add 3,451 metres of new ghat length at a total cost of Rs 361.26 crore.

Trimbakeshwar: 2 New Ghats

In Trimbakeshwar, two new ghats are being constructed on the right and left banks of the Godavari, adding 3,140 metres to the existing ghat infrastructure. This work is being executed by the Water Resources Department at a cost of Rs 146.10 crore, with completion targeted for March 2027.

Built for the Scale of Simhastha

Each ghat is being designed with crowd management built in from the outset — defined holding capacity, police chowkis, watchtowers, dedicated entry-exit routes, emergency access, and parking connectivity. Changing rooms, sanitation facilities, and lighting are part of the standard design. A standardised naming and boundary system is being established across all ghats to ensure seamless coordination between departments during the Mela.

On Amrit Snan days, when lakhs of pilgrims converge simultaneously for the ritual bath, clearly defined and well-managed ghat space is a direct safety requirement.

“The ghats are where Simhastha actually happens. Every other piece of infrastructure — the roads, the parking, the health facilities — exists to bring the pilgrim safely to the ghat and back. We are expanding and upgrading the ghats on both sides of the Godavari to ensure that the scale of Simhastha 2027 is matched by the infrastructure on the ground,” said Shekhar Singh, Commissioner, NTKMA.
