The Enigma of Heeramandi Unveiled: Fact vs Fiction in Bhansali’s Series

Pune, May 10, 2024 – Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest web series “Heeramandi” has sparked discussions about the accuracy of its portrayal of the historical district. While the series claims to depict the essence of Heeramandi, it is a work of fiction, as stated in its disclaimer. However, shedding light on the true history, Heeramandi was once synonymous with the clinking of bangles, the melody of anklets, and the graceful art of mujra, where courtesans found themselves coerced into the profession.

Heeramandi, as depicted in the series, is shown as a spacious area, but in reality, it was characterized by narrow lanes and congestion. In 1584, Mughal Emperor Akbar shifted his capital from Fatehpur Sikri to Lahore, establishing an entertainment locality known as Shahi Mohalle (Royal Quarter) for himself and his courtiers. Women from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan were brought to entertain the Mughals through mujra, a practice where women, called tawaifs, danced and sang. These tawaifs were initially known for their entertainment skills rather than prostitution.

During the Mughal era, tawaifs were trained by formal teachers, called ustaads, in classical music and dance. They were respected for their understanding of culture, leading nobles to send their children to them for etiquette lessons. However, with attacks on Lahore by Ahmad Shah Abdali and Nadir Shah, the decline of tawaifs began. Later, during Sikh rule, General Heera Singh Dogra established a grain market around Shahi Mohalle, which came to be known as Heeramandi. Despite improvements in their conditions, tawaifs faced challenges with the arrival of the British, leading to the emergence of brothels.

After independence, Heeramandi faced opposition from the government, resulting in the gradual disappearance of tawaifs. Today, Heeramandi stands as one of Lahore’s busiest areas, renowned for its culinary delights and vibrant atmosphere. The once-melodious district now echoes with the bustling activities of modern life, marking a stark contrast to its historical identity.
