Pune, 17th March 2023: From today, women in the state of Maharashtra will receive a 50% discount on ticket prices for all types of buses operated by the State Transport (ST) Corporation.

The announcement was made as part of the state’s budget for the year 2023-24 and will be implemented through the newly introduced “Mahila Samman Yojana” scheme at the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) level. The reimbursement for the scheme will be provided by the government to the corporation.

The ST Corporation already provides discounts ranging from 33% to 100% on ticket fares to different sections of the society. The government had previously announced a free travel discount for senior citizens who completed 75 years and a 50% discount for senior citizens aged between 65 to 75 years on all types of ST buses as part of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence celebrations. The corporation receives the reimbursement amount for these concessions from the government as well.

This latest move by the government is aimed at promoting women’s mobility and encouraging their participation in various sectors of society. It is expected to benefit a large number of women who use public transport on a daily basis for their commute to work or for other purposes. The discount will also help reduce the financial burden on women, particularly those from economically weaker sections, who frequently use ST buses for travel.
