Gurugram, 11 August 2025: Air India will discontinue its direct services between Delhi and Washington, D.C., starting September 1, 2025. The airline says the suspension is necessary to address operational challenges and to safeguard the reliability of its global route network.

The move comes amid a temporary shortage of aircraft caused by an extensive cabin retrofit project for its Boeing 787-8 fleet. The programme, which commenced last month, involves refurbishing 26 aircraft to improve passenger comfort and is expected to keep several planes grounded until late 2026.

Operational complexities have also been heightened by the ongoing closure of Pakistani airspace, forcing longer flight paths for certain long-haul routes.

Travellers booked on the Delhi–Washington route beyond September 1 will be contacted directly. They will be offered alternatives such as rebooking on other flights or receiving a full refund. Air India will continue to connect Washington through one-stop services via New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco, with onward connections supported by partner carriers like Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.

Despite withdrawing from the Washington route, Air India will still operate non-stop flights between India and six other North American cities, including Toronto and Vancouver.

The decision aligns with the airline’s Vihaan.AI five-year transformation plan launched after its return to the Tata Group in 2022. This long-term strategy includes ordering 570 new aircraft, merging Vistara and AirAsia India under the Air India brand, and setting up advanced maintenance and training facilities.
