Pune, 9th October 2023: Cab drivers and owners associated with ride-sharing giants Ola and Uber staged a protest today in front of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) offices in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The protest, which brought taxi services to a halt in these cities, was coordinated under the leadership of the National President of the Auto Taxi Bus Transfer Federation, Baba Kamble.

The crux of the taxi drivers’ grievances stems from the fare structure imposed by Ola and Uber. Unlike traditional taxis where rates may vary based on the vehicle type, Ola and Uber have implemented a uniform flat rate of Rs 10 for all rides. This standardized pricing has raised concerns among taxi driver-owners as it proves to be financially unsustainable.

The fixed rate of Rs 10 per ride has placed a significant strain on taxi drivers’ ability to cover their expenses, including fuel costs, maintenance, and bank loan repayments. In light of these financial challenges, the protesting taxi drivers are demanding a minimum fare of Rs 16 to ensure a sustainable income for their livelihoods.

The demonstration at the Pune RTO was not solely centred around fare issues; it also sought to address various other concerns faced by taxi driver-owners in their dealings with Ola and Uber.

The protest has drawn attention to the urgent need for resolution and dialogue between taxi driver-owners and ride-sharing companies. The RTO offices have become the epicentre of this ongoing dispute, as taxi drivers are determined to voice their concerns and seek a fair solution to the challenges they face.
