Cyclonic Storm Likely To Hit Maharashtra And Gujarat Coast On Sunday

Pune, 14th May 2021: The first cyclonic storm formed in Arabian Sea ‘Tauktae’, this year is likely to hit Maharashtra and Gujarat”, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a press release.

The deep depression over the Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast and the east-central Arabian Sea has moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 11 kmph during the past six hours. IMD said that the cyclonic storm is very likely to intensify in the next 24 hours and likely to move north-northwestwards and reach near Gujarat coast by Tuesday morning. 

“The storm is likely to hit Mumbai on Sunday while by Tuesday it is likely to reach Gujarat. During this period it is going to intensify further”, predicted IMD. 

Heavy rainfall in the coastal areas

The cyclonic storm will bring heavy rainfall with gusty winds in Kerala while from Sunday west coast areas of Karnataka, Goa, Konkan, Mumbai and Gujarat will receive rainfall. IMD also has predicted light to moderate rains in the interior parts of the state. 

Warning for fishermen

IMD has issued a warning for fishermen not to venture into the sea as high tidal waves are expected to take place during the storm. Similarly, the winds will blow in Mumba and Konkan at the rate of 90 kmph while in Central Maharashtra it will blow with a speed of 60 kmph.
