New Delhi, 11th August 2021: India has gone a step further on mixing the two vaccines. Now the Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) has also given its approval for a study on the mixing of Covaxin and Covishield Vaccine. The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore has got the responsibility of conducting this study and clinical trial.

According to sources, the subject expert committee of the central drug regulator had suggested conducting this study on 29th July 2021 itself.

During the meeting, the Expert Committee suggested CMC, Vellore approve the Phase IV clinical trial. In this trial, the effects of mixing Covid-19’s Covaxin and Covishield vaccine on 300 healthy volunteers will be tested.

The purpose of this study is to know whether a person can be given one dose of Covaxin and the other dose of Covishield for complete vaccination.

This proposed study is different from the recent study done by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). ICMR did research on people from Uttar Pradesh who were mistakenly given doses of two different anti-corona vaccines.

On the basis of this study, ICMR had said that the combination of Covaxin and Covishield has shown better results and has also created good immunity against Covid-19. This study was done on the beneficiaries of Uttar Pradesh between May and June.

On August 3, the government said that no recommendation has been made so far on mixing the two doses of anti-coronavirus vaccines. This information was given by the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Bharati Pawar in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

She said that anti-Covid-19 vaccines have been developed recently. Scientific evidence and studies regarding different vaccine combinations and compound vaccines are in their early stages.
