Nagpur, 18th March 2026: A threat email warning of possible drone-based attacks using toxic substances has put key thermal power plants across Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region on high alert, prompting a massive security response and multi-agency investigation. Despite an extensive search operation, no suspicious objects or activities have been found so far.

According to police, the email, sent from an unidentified source, specifically mentioned targeting major power installations, raising serious concerns over public safety and potential disruption to critical infrastructure. As a precaution, security has been significantly tightened across all identified locations.

The installations named in the threat include thermal power stations at Khaparkheda, Koradi, Chandrapur, and Paras. Authorities have imposed strict surveillance measures, including a complete ban on drone operations in surrounding areas.

Soon after the alert, security agencies launched a large-scale search operation at Khaparkheda and Koradi plants, along with nearby zones. The nearly five-hour-long operation involved bomb disposal squads, dog units, and quick response teams. Officials later confirmed that the sweep did not yield any suspicious findings.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Pakhale said efforts are underway to trace the origin of the email, which was sent using a generic ID. Preliminary inputs suggest a possible link to Tamil Nadu, though investigators are also examining the possibility of IP masking or spoofing.

“The email does not specify the timing of the attack, but all necessary precautions have been taken and vigilance has been increased,” the officer said, noting that further details cannot be disclosed due to the ongoing probe.

Sources indicated that the threat mentioned the potential use of cyanide or other toxic gas-based explosives via drones, heightening concerns among authorities. In response, perimeter security has been reinforced and monitoring systems upgraded at all targeted facilities.

At the Koradi Thermal Power Station, senior security manager Devendra Rathod confirmed that a high alert remains in place, with additional safeguards deployed.

With no immediate threat detected but the investigation still underway, authorities continue to maintain heightened vigilance to safeguard critical infrastructure across the region.
