Pune, 5th June 2021: Southwest monsoon winds are currently moving fast. Arriving in Kerala on June 3, they touched Andhra Pradesh in a single day, advancing northwards and reaching Karwar in Karnataka. Given the current wind speed, they are likely to reach Maharashtra on June 6 or 7, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The monsoon winds that entered the Andamans on May 21st had some difficulties in travelling to Kerala. The meteorological department earlier predicted that they would reach Kerala a day ahead of schedule as good progress was being made in the initial stages. However, its entry into Kerala was delayed due to the lack of moisture. It arrived in Kerala on June 3, two days later than scheduled.

On June 4th, monsoon winds entered the central part of the South Arabian Sea. They covered all parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep and also made progress along the Karnataka coast and inland, reaching out to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The monsoon winds have now reached Karwar in Karnataka.

Upon arrival in Kerala, favourable conditions have been created for the monsoon winds. As a result, they are making rapid progress. In the next two to three days, they can enter Maharashtra via the Konkan region. In addition, they are likely to enter Telangana and some states in north-east India, said IMD.

While the monsoon is now approaching Maharashtra, the presence of pre-monsoon rains continues in many parts of the state. On June 3rd, it rained in some places in Konkan, Central Maharashtra and Marathwada. On June 4, Pune, Nashik, Mahabaleshwar, Ratnagiri, Aurangabad, Parbhani, Akola, Amravati, Brahmapuri, Nagpur, Gondia, Wardha and other districts received light to moderate rains. The pre-monsoon rains are expected to continue till the monsoon rains become active.
