Mulshi, 31st August 2023: In a heartening display of empathy and proactive action, Nihal Lalit Jogani, a 22-year-old MBA student at a private university in Lavale, Pune, has taken the initiative to save an injured dog on the university’s campus. The incident, which occurred on August 9th, has led to a complaint being filed against an unknown assailant responsible for inflicting harm on the canine.

Jogani, a second-year MBA student residing in the university hostel, is actively involved in the Animal Welfare Committee of the university. On the evening of August 8th, as part of his routine volunteer work, he visited the university premises to feed and tend to the dogs under the committee’s care. During this time, he interacted with a black Indian breed dog named Banana, around one and a half years old. He provided the dog with care and attention, ensuring its well-being before returning to his hostel for the night.

The following morning, on August 9th, Jogani received distressing news from his friend Tanvi Saxena. Tanvi informed Nihal that Banana was found lying incapacitated near the Ramanujan class on the campus. The dog was unable to walk, and its left front leg was visibly injured. Acting swiftly, Nihal rushed to the scene, discovering the unfortunate condition of the dog. The leg was swollen and broken, causing the dog immense pain. Nihal immediately arranged for transportation and took Banana to a hospital in Baner, Pune.

Upon examination and X-rays at the veterinary hospital, it was confirmed that Banana had a broken left leg bone and sustained skin injuries consistent with being struck by a blunt object, suspected to be a wooden stick. The veterinarians performed necessary surgery to mend the fracture and provided the canine with essential medical care.

Jogani’s efforts have garnered admiration and praise from fellow students and the university community. However, the incident has also raised concerns regarding animal cruelty. In his official statement filed at the Paud Police Station (Pune rural police), he expressed his suspicion that someone intentionally harmed Banana by hitting him with a wooden stick. The incident is said to have occurred between 10:00 PM on August 8th and 11:00 AM on August 9th.

The university administration and Animal Welfare Committee are supporting Nihal’s initiative and have vowed to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals on campus. The local animal rights organization, Karma Foundation Pune, is also involved in this case, having provided support for Banana’s surgery and treatment.

The Paud Police are investigating the case based on Nihal’s complaint and are determined to bring the perpetrator to justice for this act of animal cruelty. The incident has not only highlighted the compassion and dedication of individuals like Nihal but has also shed light on the importance of animal welfare and the need to prevent such unfortunate incidents from occurring in the future.
