Pune, 1st February 2025: The Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), implemented by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) through the Smart City initiative to ease congestion, will soon be transferred to the Pune Police. This move comes as the term of the Smart City project nears its end, following months of discussions between the PMC, Pune Police, and Smart City authorities regarding the system’s future management.

During a District Planning Committee meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar directed that the PMC-owned traffic signal system be handed over to the Police Commissionerate for more effective management. Additionally, officers and staff working under the Smart City traffic management system will also be transferred to the Pune Police.

The ATMS project includes a state-of-the-art signal system installed at 124 intersections across the city. This system adjusts signal timings dynamically based on traffic flow and vehicle density, ensuring smoother movement on city roads. The project, which cost ₹102 crores, will continue to incur an annual maintenance expense of ₹11 crores, which the PMC will bear.

In addition to the ATMS, the city has 123 more traffic signals managed separately by the PMC. The simultaneous involvement of Smart City, PMC, and Traffic Police in traffic management has led to coordination issues, preventing the system from functioning at its full potential. To streamline operations and ensure effective utilization, authorities have decided to transfer complete control of traffic signals to the Pune Police.
