Pune, December 9, 2020: Sanitary napkins are used in day-to-day life by women. After the use, the waste is thrown in dustbins which go to the waste disposal plant. The women who work in the waste disposal plant find it difficult to separate sanitary napkins and it may also cause various infections. This also causes soil pollution and burning causes bad odour.

To overcome this problem a youngster from Pune came up with a machine called ‘Saneco’ which can disintegrate the used sanitary napkin in an eco-friendly way. After the disintegration, the cellulose and plastic reduce remains can be decomposed, therefore the Maharashtra Government has decided to support this experiment.

Ajinkya Dhariya has founded PadCare Labs, a startup which is incubated at Venture Centre, Pune. He has completed his mechanical engineering degree in 2017. While working on a project last year, he realised there is no machine to decompose or disintegrate the used sanitary napkins. Burning the napkin releases toxic fumes and odour. He has come out with a machine ‘Saneco’ to dispose of the napkins.

On an experimental basis, the sanitary napkin disintegration machine ‘Saneco’ was installed in five buses of Pune Smart City and a survey was conducted on the use of the machine by 350 women. In this machine, napkins are disassembled in just ten minutes using the chemical and mechanical method without burning.

Dhariya said, “An agreement has recently been signed with the Government of Maharashtra on a pilot basis. The sanitary napkins will be collected from the ITI, Aundh and will be disassembled and disinfected. With this, 4,800 napkins thrown on the ground or going to the garbage every month will be collected by the ‘Sanibin’ machine and disintegrated in the ‘Saneco’ machine and the decomposed matter will be reused. The machine has the capacity to disintegrate 1,500 sanitary napkins per day. At present, we are focusing on educational institutions, corporate offices and projects will be launched soon in Pune, Mumbai and Bengaluru.”
