Rail Projects Worth Rs 1.70 Lakh Cr Underway Across Maharashtra
Pune, 3rd February 2026: The Union Budget 2026–27 has earmarked a record ₹23,926 crore for railway projects in Maharashtra, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said while addressing the media through video conferencing on the state-wise budget allocation.
According to the Minister, the allocation is nearly 20 times higher than the average annual outlay of ₹1,171 crore provided to Maharashtra during the period 2009–14.
As part of the Budget announcements, seven high-speed rail projects have been proposed across the country, of which two new Bullet Train corridors are planned in Maharashtra. The proposed corridors and indicative travel times are:
Mumbai–Pune: 48 minutes
Pune–Hyderabad: 1 hour 55 minutes
The Minister said railway infrastructure works worth ₹1,70,058 crore are currently under progress in Maharashtra. These include projects related to new track creation, station redevelopment, and safety enhancements across the state.
Under the Amrit Station Scheme, 132 stations in Maharashtra have been identified for complete redevelopment. The total investment for station modernisation under the scheme is ₹5,675 crore, according to the data shared.
The Budget briefing also highlighted the operation of premium train services in the state. At present, 12 pairs of Vande Bharat Express and 5 pairs of Amrit Bharat Express are operating on various routes in Maharashtra.
Railway network expansion figures presented during the briefing show that since 2014, around 2,400 km of new railway tracks have been constructed in the state. Maharashtra has also achieved 100% electrification, with 3,744 km of rail lines electrified during this period.
For road safety improvements, the Railways have constructed 1,228 flyovers and underpasses across the state. In addition, the automatic train protection system Kavach has been sanctioned for 4,971 route kilometres, of which 576 route kilometres have been commissioned, while work or tendering is underway for 3,617 route kilometres.
