Pune, 29th January 2025: Maharashtra’s State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has ordered changes to the system of centre heads, supervisors, and teachers at 10th and 12th grade exam centers, sparking controversy among educational organizations. The Maharashtra State Education Coordination Committee and various educational groups have warned the State Board that they will boycott the examination process and paper checking if this decision is not revoked, citing concerns that the changes diminish trust in teachers within society.

In response to the Board’s directive to appoint exam centre directors, supervisors, and exam-related personnel from schools and higher secondary schools other than the exam centres, teachers’ organizations have expressed strong dissatisfaction. They argue that the existing system for common exam procedures does not require alteration.

A letter of protest has been sent to the State Board, threatening a boycott of the entire examination process if the decision is not reversed. However, a recent meeting between Board officials and educational organizations has resulted in positive discussions, with assurances given to find a solution to the issue.

Mahendra Ganpule, former Vice President of the Headmasters’ Association of Maharashtra, highlighted practical concerns with the new system. He stated that conducting exams while simultaneously teaching students in schools would be impossible due to the distances between schools and exam centres. Ganpule warned that implementing these changes could lead to a suspension of regular school activities for up to one and a half months.

In light of these concerns, teachers’ organizations have submitted a memorandum to the State Board, urging the government to give positive consideration to their demands and reconsider the proposed changes to the examination supervision system.
