Pune, 5 May 2020: The relaxation of the reopening of liquor shops in the third phase of the nationwide lockdown seems to be overshadowed by all efforts so far to stop the spread of the Corona epidemic. Like Monday, there is a huge crowd of people on the streets and outside liquor shops. People are so distraught about consuming alcohol that it seems they neither care for themselves nor their loved ones. All the arrangements and claims of physical distance are proving to be futile.

For 45 days liquor shops were closed in Pune. The state government permitted to open them on Monday with many conditions. In some places, there was even the possibility of violence. Because of this, in many places, the administration had to announce the closure of liquor shops. Police also had to use force at some places due to the increasing crowd.

According to police, all shops are being given notice under 149 CrPC for ensuring the social distancing norm. Shop owners must maintain social distance among customers at their shops. They should not become a reason for crowding. They should adopt a token system with timings. People should be asked to stand outside to maintain physical distance. Also, hand sanitizers should be used by customers and shopkeepers.

“Vehicles without a pass are not allowed. For the purchase of liquor, people can go only by walk-in permitted time and not on vehicles. Action will be taken if they become a reason for crowding at the shop”, tweeted Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham.
