Pune, November 24, 2019: Pune has just unveiled its first 3D zebra crossing. It is a new form of road safety design.
The traffic branch of Pune city police has taken this initiative to reduce the rate of increasing road accidents. A 3D zebra crossing is not a pop-up installation but simply a cleverly-detailed optical design. The design is intended to grab the attention of drivers to make them slow down as they will immediately assume that an object is on the road.
For the past few years, such crossings have been used in many European countries while the Delhi civic body has adopted this concept since 2016, to reduce the speed of vehicles approaching traffic junctions.
The first 3-D Speed Breaker in Pune city has been painted on BMCC Road in Deccan Gymkhana area, on an experimental basis by road department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). “Expecting the increase in pedestrians safety without compromising the safety of vehicle drivers. Waiting for the reactions from the public (both pedestrians and vehicle drivers)”, posted Anirudha Pawaskar, head of the road department of PMC, on Facebook.
An earlier design of the 3D zebra crossing was painted on road at the office of DCP (traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh in Yerwada. After observation, the PMC was requested to paint similar designs on the city roads.
